Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still

While volunteering at the Outer Banks History Center in North Carolina during this past Christmas, Holly came across a collection of recordings made by Ann and Frank Warner in the Summer of 1942. From Appalachia to the Outer Banks, the Warners recorded hundreds of early American songs through the mouths of local people. (Holly is kin to some of the singers!)

John Cohen film screening

We recently went to a film screening of two documentary films about American music by musician and music historian John Cohen. He is a sweet and approachable man.

In the film he records the songs of Appalachian mountain folk of North Carolina and Kentucky. They sing in the fields, living rooms, church, coal mines, and on front porches.
